The Antarctic ice sheet may be melting faster than previously anticipated, warns a study by the University of Massachusetts. Researchers used a new modeling method to show that the ice sheet could shrink by around 20% by the end of the century, raising sea levels by up to 6 feet. This could result in devastating consequences for coastlines across the globe. The deteriorating ice sheet could also speed up climate change, as the additional water would absorb more heat and potentially trigger feedback loops that could accelerate the process. This study highlights the urgent need for people around the world to take action to curb greenhouse gas emissions, limit global warming and protect our planet from catastrophic consequences. Science offers a bleak outlook if we do not take immediate action to preserve our planet, our home.
