Ask Extension expert: Effects of spring’s extreme weather still pressuring plants into summer

So, I was reading this article called Ask Extension expert: Effects of spring’s extreme weather still pressuring plants into summer and it was pretty fascinating! Basically, the article explains how some plants are still feeling the effects of the crazy weather we had this spring, even though it’s already summer.

The article goes on to explain that plants need a certain amount of “chilling hours” during the winter to be able to burst into life and grow in the spring, and that when the temperatures fluctuate wildly, it can mess with their internal clocks and make them late to sprout.

But that’s not all - extreme weather like heat waves and droughts can also make it harder for plants to thrive, which can lead to a whole host of problems for ecosystems and food supplies.

I have to say, as someone who loves gardening and spending time outdoors, this article definitely struck a chord with me. I’ve noticed that some of my plants have been slower to grow this year, and now I know why!

Overall, I think the article does a great job of highlighting an issue that’s not only relevant to gardeners but to everyone who cares about our environment. It’s easy to take nature for granted, but when we see how even small changes in weather patterns can have a big impact on plants and animals, it’s a reminder of how fragile and interconnected our world really is. So, next time you’re out enjoying a beautiful day, take a moment to appreciate all the hard work that goes into making it possible!
