Climate change causes 2m deaths in 50 years; poor suffer most

Climate change has claimed the lives of around 2 million people over the last 50 years, with the most vulnerable populations bearing the brunt of the fatalities, according to a recent study. The research found that the poorest countries and regions, such as sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, have been hit the hardest. This is largely due to a lack of resources and infrastructure to cope with the extreme weather events that climate change has brought about. Likewise, women and children make up a disproportionate number of the casualties.

One major caveat, however, is that the study’s figures only include deaths caused by climate change-related disasters such as floods, storms, and droughts. The true number of lives lost as a result of the damage to our environment could be much higher.

This report highlights the tragic human cost of climate change, which is often discussed in terms of the environmental, economic, and political repercussions. It’s essential to recognize that climate change is not just a distant problem for future generations, but a crisis that is currently affecting people all over the world. As individuals and communities, we must take action to reduce our carbon footprint, support sustainability policies and advocate for climate justice. The challenge is significant, but the stakes could not be higher.
