Climate change: Deforestation surges despite pledges

So, I read this really interesting article the other day about how deforestation is still a major issue, despite promises from governments around the world to tackle it. Basically, there are a bunch of countries that pledged to reduce deforestation by 2020, but according to the article, they haven’t really followed through on that promise.

The article goes on to explain that deforestation is a huge contributor to climate change, and that we need to be doing everything we can to stop it. Apparently, trees absorb carbon dioxide from the air, which is one of the main greenhouse gases that is causing the Earth’s temperature to rise. So the more trees we cut down, the more carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere, and the worse climate change gets.

I was actually really surprised to learn how much of an impact deforestation has on the environment. When I was younger, I used to love going hiking and exploring the forests near my house. It never occurred to me just how important those trees were - not just for the animals that lived there, but for the entire planet.

The article also mentions that some companies are trying to address deforestation by using sustainable practices, like only sourcing wood from responsibly-managed forests. I think that’s really cool - it shows that even big corporations can take steps to help the environment, if they’re willing to put in the effort.

Overall, the article made me realize just how much work still needs to be done to combat climate change. It’s easy to get caught up in our day-to-day lives and forget about the bigger picture, but articles like this one are a good reminder that we all need to do our part.
