So, have you heard about the Iowa meteorologist Chris Gloninger who had to step down because he received threats? I read an article about it and it blew my mind! Apparently, he was receiving some pretty nasty messages from people who weren’t happy with his weather reports.
Basically, Chris Gloninger was a meteorologist for KCRG-TV in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was really passionate about his job, and would often take to Twitter to share updates and predictions with his followers. But things started to get heated when people disagreed with his forecasts, or when he didn’t report what they wanted to hear.
Apparently, Gloninger was getting bombarded with angry messages and threats, to the point where he had to go on leave for a while. Eventually, he decided to step down from his job altogether, stating that “the negativity and the threats have taken a toll on my mental health.”
As someone who gets a lot of hate online, I can’t even imagine what Gloninger must have been going through. It’s really scary to think that someone could be so passionate about weather that they’d resort to threats if they don’t like what they hear. But it’s also a reminder of how important it is to be kind and respectful when we’re interacting with others online.
Anyway, I think this story is a good reminder of the kind of pressure that people in public-facing jobs can face when they’re sharing information that’s important to others. It’s important to remember that behind every tweet or update is a real person who’s just trying to do their best.
