I just saw this crazy article about a Texas mayor freaking out ahead of the end of Title 42, which is apparently supposed to happen soon. The guy’s basically declared a state of emergency, claiming that it’s like a hurricane’s coming. Sounds a little extreme, don’t you think?
Anyway, from what I gathered, Title 42 is a policy that allows the US to turn away people attempting to cross the border during the pandemic, supposedly to prevent the spread of COVID-19. But now that things are opening up again, the policy is set to end soon, and apparently this mayor thinks it’s going to result in a huge influx of migrants that’ll overwhelm the communities along the border.
I can understand being worried about the impact of a sudden increase in population, but calling it a hurricane seems a bit much to me. Then again, I don’t live in Texas, so maybe I’m missing something. But either way, it seems like this issue is going to have some pretty big consequences for the people living near the border.
I don’t know about you, but I feel like the immigration debate has been going on forever, with no real solutions in sight. It’s frustrating to see people being treated like political footballs instead of human beings with real needs. I hope things work out for the best, but I’m not holding my breath.
