With summer in full swing, the U.S. Coast Guard is reminding boaters of the importance of safety on the water. As temperatures continue to rise and more people head out to enjoy water activities, the Coast Guard is offering several tips to ensure these activities are fun, safe and accident-free.
The Coast Guard is urging boaters to always have a life jacket on board, and to make sure everyone on board is wearing one. Additionally, boaters are advised to always have a working VHF marine radio with them, as well as other communication devices such as a cell phone or satellite phone.
Boaters should also make sure their vessels are properly maintained and in good working order before heading out. This includes checking the engine, fuel, and safety equipment. Furthermore, boaters should always have a well-stocked first-aid kit on board in case of emergencies.
Moreover, the Coast Guard reminds boaters to operate at a safe speed and never operate a vessel under the influence of alcohol or drugs. It is important for boaters to stay alert and keep an eye out for other boats, obstacles, and swimmers.
In 2020, the Coast Guard reported 613 boating fatalities, with the majority of accidents caused by operator inattention, inexperience, or excessive speed. By following these safety tips, the Coast Guard hopes to reduce the number of boating accidents and fatalities this summer.
As fun and exciting as boating can be, it can also be dangerous if proper safety measures are not taken. By following these safety tips, boaters can enjoy their summer activities on the water while maintaining a higher level of safety.
